Energy Innovations that Changed our World

Human history has been shaped by the understanding and use of energy on our planet. When people hear the word energy, they often think of the electricity that powers their homes or the fuel that moves their vehicles. However, the use of energy in everyday life began long before the modern technology we have today. Since the discovery of fire around 400,000 years ago, humans have relied on energy to cook, stay warm, and survive. Roughly 6,000 years ago, humans harnessed wind energy though sailboats to travel across water and transport goods. Wind energy, along with hydropower, helped grind grains.  

Simple fire and wind resources were enough when societies were small, and life was less complex. With population increases and global trade expansions, modern ways of living require more powerful and reliable energy systems. In fact, every major energy transition has been driven by the need to solve human problems, like transportation, industrial production, and communication. These changes were made possible through scientific observation and experimentation, as well as advances in literacy, which helped people better understand the Earth’s biological processes and limited resources.

Today’s energy systems are designed to support an interconnected, technology-driven world. Modern society depends on energy to power everything from manufacturing and mass communication to food production and healthcare. Think about social media, AI, streaming platforms, cash registers – everyday conveniences people take for granted because of these invisible, complex energy networks. These technologies would not exist as we know them without energy, making energy education essential for understanding how the modern world truly works.  

So, what happened when society needed more energy?  

The Industrial Revolution was a natural response to growing political, societal, and industrial change resulting from global trade and migration during the 19th century. Growing cities led to new economic opportunities, threats of disease, and the need for daily energy reliability. Advancements in transportation, urbanization, labor, and even communication led to revolutionary changes in everyday life. This began with the first commercially successful steam engine, which was introduced in 1712, when these engines began to rely on coal to heat water and produce steam to power the engine, revolutionizing transportation!  

Steam-powered trains and ships could carry goods and people across vast distances in a record-breaking time. Say good-bye to mail and store goods distributed by wagons! This changed the cost of goods, private and public mobility, as well as technology in homes and urban development. Along with hydropower, coal helped power trains and ships, as well as heat stoves in the home.

This continued use of energy in daily life led to the need for additional energy resources and alternatives. In 1821, the first successful natural gas well was dug by William Hart, leading to the creation of the Fredonia Gas Light Company. Initially, natural gas was mostly used for lighting but grew to be used for cooking and heating homes. 39 years later, a homemade rig in Pennsylvania struck oil, showing that large amounts of oil could be found and successfully drilled. This discovery led to oil being used as a replacement for whale oil in gas lamps, as well as further innovation with engines. Less than 50 years later, oil was being mass produced for automobiles. The invention of the Bunsen Burner with natural gas created new power for manufacturing and electricity generation. 

These inventions and innovations lead to the widespread use of fossil fuels for energy production. The inventions of the steam engine, the automobile, and the discovery of natural gas wells rapidly popularized and transformed the way society consumed energy. The invention of the automobile combined with a lower price of gas led to more people relying on cars, commuting with them, and eventually creating suburban areas for communities to live outside of where they worked.

The spread of electricity with power lines extended new resources from cities to more rural areas. Electricity enabled stronger communication over long distances, changed labor hours, and modified what a typical American home felt like. Fossil fuels are still widely used today, with over 80% of the world’s energy production coming from fossil fuels.

In more recent years, alternative energy sources have entered the mainstream energy market. Wind and hydropower are now harnessed through wind turbines and hydroelectric dams to generate electricity. Although scientists did not discover that energy could be produced through nuclear fission until 1938, nuclear power has since become a major energy source, accounting for nearly 20% of electricity generation in the United States.  

The Industrial Revolution and energy innovation revealed unintended consequences that can arise with technological progress. Public health was significantly affected by increased pollution, industrial working conditions, and evolving manufacturing standards. These learning challenges created a need for energy sources that could generate power and energy with reduced localized pollution, limit long-term environmental strain, and better support a growing population and advancing technologies. As a result, alternative energy resources and biofuels were necessary to diversify our energy landscape and reduce reliance on nonrenewable resources.  

Modern energy increasingly relies on digital communication, data centers, automation and artificial intelligence, and digital health care communications. These complex systems rely on a steady energy supply, supported by fossil fuels alongside continued innovation in nuclear power, electricity infrastructure, and renewable energy. Global trade and supply disruptions also revealed energy security risks and limitations, particularly with centralized energy systems and imported fuels. However, alternative energy wasn’t always practical! Alternative energy systems were developed alongside, not independently from, traditional energy and fossil fuel infrastructure. In our modern world, we can consider a more diverse energy landscape due to improvements in material science, engineering, efficiency, and grid technology, which all continues to help make renewable energy more scalable, affordable, and reliable.  

Humans powered the growth of our civilization through energy innovations that focused not only on producing energy but also using it more efficiently. The integration of biofuels and renewable energy resources has widened the energy landscape, helping to stabilize energy consumption, support new technologies, and new ways of communication, built on generations of energy innovation and science that changed our world.
